Symbolism plays an essential role in Sueyon’s "The Possibility of Impossibility". The artist incorporates the ten symbols of longevity in her work that were elected out of the 13 symbols generally used in Korea. These symbols- the sun, moon, cloud, rock, mountain, pine tree, bamboo, water, peach, deer, crane, turtle, and mushroom are placed in ironic situations to represent the futility of human desire for immortality. Additionally, the artist uses traditional painting methods with a modern twist on silk to enhance the perspective of Korean traditional paintings.
